Durga Puja: Where Tradition Comes Home

There are festivals, and then there is Durga Puja.

The Homecoming of Maa Durga

Durga Puja celebrates the victory of good over evil, with Maa Durga's triumph over the demon Mahishasura symbolizing the power of righteousness, courage, and hope.

But for Bengalis, there is another beautiful way of looking at these few days.

Maa Durga is coming home.

She arrives with her children—Lakshmi, Saraswati, Kartik, and Ganesha—and for those precious few days, the goddess is not distant or unreachable. She becomes part of the family.

Yet, perhaps the most beautiful part is that Durga Puja belongs to everyone.

People from different backgrounds come together to admire the artistry, enjoy the festivities, share food, listen to music, and experience the joy of the celebration.

The Food We Wait All Year For

And, of course, no Bengali celebration is complete without food!

Durga Puja and food are inseparable.

From steaming plates of bhoger khichuri and labra to crispy beguni, fragrant polao, delicious fish and mutton preparations, chutney, papad, luchi, aloo bhaja, and an irresistible assortment of mishti—the Puja table is a celebration in itself.

Food is not simply served during Puja.

It is shared.

Neighbors feed neighbors. Friends invite friends. Families gather around tables.

And somehow, there is always room for mishti.
